If homeowners are a lot more likely to feel good about their money than people who don't own, should you buy?

I'm a local realtor in Delray Beach and Boca Raton, and the rent-or-buy question comes up all the time. A new survey caught my eye, so I looked at the numbers.

Clever Real Estate surveyed 1,000 U.S. adults. 68% of homeowners said they were satisfied with their finances, vs. 47% of non-homeowners. 42% of homeowners live paycheck to paycheck, vs. 61% of non-homeowners. That's a correlation. It doesn't prove buying causes financial satisfaction.

Everyone wants to time the market perfectly, but the easiest way to win is time in the market.

Owning here has real costs. In a UNF poll of Florida homeowners, 63% said insurance worries them more than property taxes. Add HOA dues and upkeep to the monthly number.

Owners who make the home their primary residence can claim the homestead exemption. Amendment 3 on the Nov. 3 ballot could raise the non-school exemption, and pbcpao.gov has an estimate calculator. I'm not telling you how to vote, but I'm personally voting yes on Amendment 3.

Renting still makes sense if you might move soon or want to keep your savings intact.

Thinking about whether owning makes sense for you in Delray or Boca? Call or text me at 954-817-9463.
